Liberty Head (Type One) Gold Dollar (1849-1854) Coin Description: Weight: 1.67 grams (0.05 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 13mm Obverse (front): Liberty's head circled by 13 stars. She faces left and wears a coronet inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". Reverse (back): a simple wreath encircling the date and value of the coin, and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Coin History: This was the first type of gold dollar and is known as the "Liberty Head" type or the "Type I" gold dollar. The front was designed by James B. Longacre. The back also designed by Longacre but with help from Peter Filatreu Cross, his assistant. Starting in 1849, the mints that produced quantities of this coin were Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charolette, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The total quantity minted each year ranges from 511,301 in 1850 to 4,384,149 in 1853. The problem soon discovered about this coin was that it was less than three-quarters the size of the present day dime and, therefore, could be lost easily despite its very high value (equal to approximately $27.94 today). It was the smallest coin in U.S. history. As a result of its size issue, many people were extremely critical of the new coin causing the coin to be removed from circulation.
Liberty Head (Type One) Gold Dollar (1849-1854)
Indian Head (Type Two) Gold Dollar (1854-1856) Coin Description: Weight: 1.67 grams (0.05 troy ounce) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 15mm Obverse (front): head on front faces left and is circled by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Reverse (back): simple wreath surrounding the date and value of the coin Coin History: This coin was designed by James B. Longacre. He based his obverse design on his work with the three-dollar piece. Historians have suggested that the design is actually based on a Roman marble figure to which Longacre added the headdress. The "Crouching Venus" statue on display in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, more specifically, is the suggested basis of his design. It was only minted my six mints. The total quatities minted each year range from 24,600 in 1856 to 824,883 in 1855. The new Indian Head type was not free from problems, however, even with the considerably improved diameter of the coin. With the edge of the coin standing so much higher than the rest (this is called high relief), very few coins were fully struck resulting in a design that was not sturdy enough to remain in circulation.
Indian Head (Type Two) Gold Dollar (1854-1856)
Indian Head (Type Three) Gold Dollar (1856-1889) Coin Description: Weight: 1.67 grams (0.05 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 15mm Obverse (front): similar to the Small Head type with a larger head and the headdress moved upward. Also, the details of the face were slightly altered and the head faces the left. It is circled by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Reverse (back): simple wreath design that surrounds the date and value of the coin. Coin History: This coin was designed by James B. Longacre. It was continuously minted from Philadelphia, with certain quatities being produced at Charolette, Dahlonega, and San Francisco. Also, proofs were minted in Philadelphia starting in 1859. The total quantity of proof coins minted each year ranges from 15 in 1856 to 1,779 in 1889. The total quantity of coins minted for circulation ranges from 420 in 1875 to 1,764,396 in 1856. Production of the gold dollar was discontinued in 1889.
Indian Head (Type Three) Gold Dollar (1856-1889)
Liberty Head $2.50 (1840-1907) Coin Description: Weight: 4.17 grams (0.13 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 18mm Obverse (front): has head facing the left wearing a coronet that bears the inscription "LIBERTY". It is circled by 13 stars and has the date stamped below it. Reverse (back): In the center is an eagle with its wings spread and with arrows and a branch clutched by its feet. The inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" circles the eagle with "2 1/2 D." stamped under its feet. Coin History: This coin, commonly referred to as the Coronet or Liberty Head quarter eagle, was minted nonstop from 1840 through 1907 and was designed by Christian Gobrecht. It was considered a "workhorse coin", meaning, other than a few private-owned collection pieces, most are in circulated condition.
Liberty Head $2.50 (1840-1907)
Indian Head $2.50 (1908-1929) Coin Description: Weight: 4.17 grams (0.13 troy ounces) Purtity: 90% gold Diameter: 18mm Obverse (front): shows a Native American male in a headdress. Above him is inscribed "LIBERTY" and below him is inscribed the date. On either side of the "indian" are stars (six on the left and seven on the right). Reverse (back): has the standing eagle in the center. Above the eagle is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", above the eagle's feathers on the right side are the words "IN GOD WE TRUST", and on the left side (under the eagle's chest) is the Latin inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The denomination is inscribed under the eagle's feet ("2 1/2 DOLLARS"). Coin History: Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, an accomplished sculptor and medal maker, the Indian Head quarter eagle was put into production in 1908. On a mission to "improve" the look of American coinage, President Theodore Roosevelt, got the idea of making coins incuse, meaning hammered or stamped, like certain Egyptian coins and hired an outside source (Pratt) to help with the change. This change was highly criticized by people in banking and numismatics because they felt that the new coins could be easily counterfieted, would be unsanitary, and wouldn't stack easily. However, the public didn't agree with that opinion and the quarter eagle remained in circulation until 1929 when the Great Depression caused economic upheaval.
Indian Head $2.50 (1908-1929)
Indian Head $3 (1854-1889) Coin Description: Weight: 5.01 grams (0.16 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 20.5mm Obverse (front): depicts a representation of Lady Liberty wearing a headdress of an Indian princess that is inscribed with "LIBERTY". Inscribed around the head is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Reverse (back): depicts a wreath of corn, cotton and tobacco around the date and value of the coin. Coin History: Designed by James B. Longacre, this coin was originally intended to tie into the U.S. Postal system (sheets of 100 stamps were $3 at the time). It was minted in small quantities and was never widely used in commerce. The entire series consisted of 535,000 total coins, the smallest amount of any series of circulating U.S. coins. It was minted in Philadelphia (every year),and Dahlonega, New Orleans, and San Francisco (year specific). Total quantity minted ranges from 2 for the 1870-S to 138,618 for the 1854.
Indian Head $3 (1854-1889)
Liberty Head $5 (1839-1908) Coin Description: Weight: 8.35 grams (0.24 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 21.6mm Obverse (front): Left-facing Lady Liberty with the coronet bearing the inscription "LIBERTY". The head is circled with 13 stars and the date is stamped below it. Reverse (back): An eagle is in the center with its wings spread outward. A banner is above the eagle's head, bearing the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST". "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" is inscribed around the eagle and the words "FIVE D." are inscribed below the eagle. Coin History: This design was used from 1839 to 1908, nearly 70 years, with a modest change in 1866 when "In God We Trust" was placed on the reverse above the eagle (it was not there prior to 1866). It is the only coin of a single design to be minted at seven U.S. mints: Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver.

Liberty Head $10 (1838-1907) Coin Description: Weight: 16.71 grams (0.53 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 27mm Obverse (front): Miss Liberty portrait facing left with 13 stars circling her and the date inscribed below the portrait. Reverse (back): American eagle with wings spread. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" around the eagle, "TEN D." below the eagle, and "IN GOD WE TRUST" (1866-1907) on a ribbon style banner above the eagle. Coin History: This coin was minted from 1838 to 1907 and was designed by Christian Gobrecht. The inscription of "IN GOD WE TRUST" didn't appear on the back of coins until 1866. Production of this coin occured in five of the mints; Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver in various periods.The mintage ranges from 100 in 1875 to 3,877,220 in 1881.
Liberty Head $10 (1838-1907)
Indian Head $10 (1907-1933) Coin Description: Weight: 16.71 grams (0.53 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 27mm Obverse (front): Features the head of Liberty wearing an Indian headdress that bears the inscription "LIBERTY". 13 stars form an arc above Liberty's head and the date appears below Liberty. Reverse (back): Features a proud bald eagle puffing out its chest while standing among olive branches. To the right of the eagle, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed and to the left of the eagle is inscribed "IN GOD WE TRUST". Above the eagle is "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and below the eagle is "TEN DOLLARS". Coin History: This ten dollar gold eagle was struck by the US Mint continuously from 1907 until 1916. It was designed by a sculptor by the name of Augustus Saint-Gaudens and were originally commissioned for use on other denominations. This coins original sculpted design had too high of a relief for the Mint to strike readily so modifications to the original design were required and made to make the coins sufficiently flat to be struck by one blow the the Mint's presses. This process took months to complete. The first of these coins were produced without the "IN GOD WE TRUST" and caused public outrage, prompting the Congress to pass a bill mandating its inclusion.
Indian Head $10 (1907-1933)
Liberty Head $20 (1849-1907) Coin Description: Weight: 33.43 grams (1.07 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 34mm Obverse (front): Liberty's portrait, facing the left, bears the coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY". The date is directly below her portrait and 13 stars circle the portrait. Reverse (back): The American eagle is depicted with "IN GOD WE TRUST" (1866-1933 only) above it. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" creates an arc over the eagle and "TWENTY DOLLARS" is underneath the eagle. Coin History: The first mintage of the double eagle coincided with the California Gold Rush in 1849. However, regular production of this coin didn't begin until the next year, 1850, and continued until 1933. "IN GOD WE TRUST" was added to this coin in 1866. Double eagles from prior to 1866 will not have this motto on it.
Liberty Head $20 (1849-1907)
Saint-Gaudens $20 (1907-1933) Coin Description: Weight: 33.43 grams (1.07 troy ounces) Purity: 90% gold Diameter: 34mm Obverse (front): displays a rendition of the designer's, Augustus Saint-Gaudens', full length figure of Lady Liberty with flowing hair. She holds a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her right hand. The capitol building is in the lower left background. Reverse (back): features a flying eagle with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" at the top of the coin and "TWENTY DOLLARS" above the eagle and below the US inscription. Coin History: This coin is named after its designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally, this was a "high-relief" coin and it took up to 11 strikes to bring out the design and didn't stack correctly for banking purposes. Only 12,367 of the high-relief coins were struck in 1907. The Saint-Gaudens double eagle was minted from 1907 through 1933. The date on these coins started in 1907 as Roman numerals to the right of Lady Liberty and was later changed to the more convenient Arabic numberals. Also, it started out with 46 stars along the rim and was changed to 48 in 1912 when New Mexico and Arizona became states. The total number of Saint-Gaudens double eagles minted ranges from 12,367 in 1907 (high-relief) to 8,816,000 in 1928 (low-relief).

Bullion Buffalo $50 - One Ounce (2006-Date) Coin Description: Weight: 31.10 grams (1.00 troy ounce) Purity: 99.9% gold Diameter: 32.7mm Obverse (front): right-facing male indian. The date is displayed on the indian's shoulder. Reverse (back): Dipicts a bufflao with the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" above the buffalo. Under the buffalo is inscribed "$50" and under the value is inscribed "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD". Above the buffalo's back is the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and below the buffalo's chin is the inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST". Coin History: The gold buffalo, also known as the American Buffalo, is a 24K bullion coin first offered for sale by the U.S. Mint on June 22, 2006. It was available for shipment beginning on July 13, 2006. The coin follows the design of the Indian Head Nickel and has gained its nickname form the American Bison on the back of the coin. This was the first time ever that the US government has minted pure (.9999) 24-karat gold coins for the public. The coin was minted for the public due to the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005 that mandated the production of a one-ounce 24-karat gold bullion coin with a face value of $50 and a mintage limit of up to 300,000 coins.
